signs you're a crappy programmer

an excellent post by Damien Katz. not really fresh, but really worth a read.

the first sign also brings to mind a favorite quote of mine:

«A language that doesn’t affect the way you think about programming is not worth knowing.»

Front Deutscher Äpfel

Wurde auch Zeit, daß sich jemand des deutschen Obstes annimmt! Zu Eurer Information hier ein Auszug aus dem Weltnetzangebot der Initiative:

  1. Keine Überfremdung des deutschen Obstbestandes mehr!
  2. Südfrüchte raus!
  3. Weg mit faulem Fallobst!

dove evolution

»We asked a high-end fashion photographer to make her look as beautiful as possible for a cover/billboard (normal advertising request). I asked the retoucher to save his progress in files/layers, and that’s what was used to create the animation. It’s 100% real. Retouching took 4 full days. Make-up, lighting, and shooting took about 4 to 5 hours.«

simple is difficult

chris brown writes: “It is much more difficult to write simple code. There are far too many things to think about. What is a meaningful name for this class, method or variable? How do I test this piece of code? How do I decouple things for easier re-use? Is this class responsible for the appropriate things? How do I remove duplication?...etc, etc. Whew! I need a lie down.

i couldn’t agree more!

smoke this.

the following code execudes just fine (the puts are executed in order 1-7, no parse errors). earns an anything-special-about-that? shrug from the ruby crowd, a highly disturbed look from everyone else (including me).

module Acid
    puts "1) My first Acid."
    def self.append_features(mod)
        puts "4) Now #{mod.class}'s taken Acid."
        mod.extend(self)
    end
  end

class Bus
    puts "2) Now that's a boring bus."
end

class Furthur < Bus
    puts "3) First, setup the fuel."
    include Acid
    puts "5) Lets get on the magic bus."
    def initialize
        puts "6) A magic bus has been set up."
    end
    def play_hippie_music
        puts "7) Driving Home. That's it, folks!"
    end
end

magic_bus = Furthur.new
magic_bus.play_hippie_music

aphex twin is alive and well at youtube

a warning, in case you hadn’t noticed: some of this stuff is really dark & twisted.

- [windowlicker](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCjwr0YG7ow) - [come to daddy](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Az_7U0-cK0) - [rubber johnny](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJUChQSDmsM) (thoughts of [eraserhead](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eraserhead) come to mind) - flex [pt 1](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnvmcRbiwm8),

- [monkey drummer](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1ZGIrNf71Q)

all of these were by aphex twin & chris cunningham.

and for some comic relief:
visit osama and the family guy, or, even lighter, monty pythons legendary dead parrot sketch!

Qingdao

“The taxi ride to the restaurant was insane. The taxi driver was weaving in and out of cars at speeds between 160 and 180 KPH (between 100 and 110 MPH). He was passing cars on double yellow lines with incoming head-on traffic. When I reached for my seatbelt, I quickly realized it was broken. I looked at the driver and asked if I could atleast share his. He just laughed. At one point he was passing a car on a double yellow with an incoming Tsingtao beer truck coming at us at full speed. Luckily the other driver swerved in time but missed our taxi by less than 2 inches. It was the closest I’ve come to “a serious and most likely fatal traffic accident. (Wouldn’t that have been ironic, getting killed by a beer truck while attending the beer festival.) By the time I arrived at the Italian restaurant my legs were shaking and I almost threw up. So if you ever get in a taxi in Qingdao and the driver’s name is 陈心南 (Chen Xin Nan), get the fuck out. (Although he did get me across town in record time.)” thewhiskeydragon.net
