the movie is loosely based on a the short story Heart of Darkness written by Joseph Conrad in 1902. He writes about his horrifying experiences from a journey through the Congo - to get a grasp, remember Martin Sheen in the final part of Apocalypse Now. The story Heart of Darkness, which also features the character of Mr. Kurtz, is available online.
Th situation in Congo doesn't seem to have changed a lot since then. Except that today, the warriors are 7-year old drunk children. article @ spiegel online (german)
